The Great Reset
Famously called a "baseless conspiracy theory" by the New York Times, the World Economic Forum's agenda was front and center at Davos 2021. Our co-editor, Luis Gonzalez, takes a look.
Now, to be fair, when the New York Times called The Great Reset a “baseless conspiracy theory” they meant the idea that the novel coronavirus, which causes COVID-19, was manufactured by global elites in order to justify a world-wide shift in economic and social policy. Still, their piece failed to look into what The Great Reset actually is.
The Great Reset is the name of an initiative started by the World Economic Forum (WEF) in order to “emerge from this crisis a better world”. According to their website, the globe is actually entrenched in deep crises beyond COVID-19, and “ad hoc fixes” won’t be enough to solve the problem, therefore, we need to replace the current social and economic foundations of our societies with new ones proposed by the establishment elites over at the WEF. If we can be fair to the conspiracy theorists for a moment, I think it’s easy to see why they might be worried.
It’s highly unlikely that the planet’s most powerful politicians and billionaires manufactured a virus in order to push their agenda, such a thing would require beyond-perfect coordination of millions of independent actors. The level of sophistication required is what brings the idea down from “possibility” to the realm of fiction. However, what’s not so complicated is that a bunch of people who already agreed with each other on how the world should work saw the pandemic as a chance to finally achieve their policy goals.
The world’s richest people, philanthropists, activists and elite politicians across most Western democracies are all trapped in a sort of ideological echo chamber. So they have similar ideas, they agree about initiatives like The Great Reset, and they use very similar phrases when they speak in public. All of this makes it seem like not-so-subtle subjective messaging to the masses, and allowing people to make hilarious/frightening compilation videos like this one:
The ideas behind The Great Reset aren’t even new, if we look back through the WEF’s website or look at the agendas of previous Davos summits we’ll see very similar concepts being floated around by the same people. The difference is that when they looked at COVID they saw an opportunity to repackage the same old shtick into a brand new “initiative”.
But while this is just the WEF doing what it always does, we can’t deny that there are some pretty big risks in it. The fact that The Great Reset spread like wildfire on social media and was immediately turned into some complex virus-manufacturing conspiracy theory proves that their messaging is dangerous. People don’t want their politicians being manipulated by billionaires, they also don’t want their leaders being manipulated by China, but Davos 2021 is exactly what that looks like.
The week opened with China’s Xi Jinping praising WEF founder Klaus Schwabb, completely ignoring China’s failure to contain COVID, and generally pretending to be on the side of equality and inclusivity. One look at his country shows that Xi is a liar, and always has been, but the WEF’s respect for a brutal dictator outright places them in the role of Xi’s own PR agency. None of this look very good to the people who oppose globalization, or those who believe that politicians like Joe Biden and Justin Trudeau are China’s stooges.
From the outside, it looks like the WEF is just a bunch of Western elites, either too incompetent or too cowardly to avoid playing right into China’s hands. Unfortunately, this initial perception is probably very accurate, which is bad news for all of us. Still, in the United States, the current Administration will probably continue to march down that road, which risks electoral rebuke in 2024, placing America’s destiny in the hands of even less competent people, or perhaps into the hands of incompetent and brash people like Donald Trump.
